Run #12: Snow and Snot

The students were buzzing with excitement at the light snowfall that began around 1:30 this afternoon.  Yes, it is rather unusual to see snow in Shanghai, and it is just that much more invigorating knowing that is has the potential to cancel school the next day.

Regardless, a little snow was not enough to keep me inside.  After Monday's chilly run I felt more than prepared for another blustery jaunt on the road.  I even came prepared, with all the right attire and gear for a cold run.

Well, almost.  I had no idea how freakin' windy it would be!  I've read that if you'll be running in windy conditions it's best to start heading into the wind, so that once you've built up a good sweat you can finish with the wind at your back and not get so chilled.  Naturally I tested the wind to help determine my route to ensure this was the case... ya right!  I just got lucky that the wind was in my face as I headed along the same route as Monday.

And when I say in my face, I mean those blasted snowflakes were slapping my cheeks, stinging my nose, and piercing my eyes!  Without a hat (or goggles, or face mask) the best I could do was duck my head and try to look at least one step ahead on the pavement to avoid any massive puddle or sudden road hazard.

That's when the snot started, and I wished I had a bandana to wipe my nose.  Blowing snot rockets has never been my thing (though I've witnessed my fair share - thanks Donna!), and I really didn't want to muck up my new running gloves.  Good thing my sleeve worked as well as it always has.

After the turn around I was relieved that the wind did not suddenly change direction, and was now nudging me along from behind.  Finally I could actually open my eyes, and even better I could tilt my head back and just let the snot run down the back of my throat.  Yum!  Too bad it wasn't quite enough to hock a good Chinese loogie.  What a shame.
